Marriage Licenses
July 4th Closing
Marriage licenses are issued from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) and are valid for 60 days from the date of issuance. The fee for a Marriage License is $60 in addition to a $1 keepsake copy. Please note that we only accept CASH or CHECK in the office.

Both applicants must appear in the office in order for the license to be issued. Applicants who wish to expedite the application process can complete the online application using the link below. Additional paperwork will need to be completed in the office prior to the issuance of the license.

Please Note: the online application only works using the Internet Explorer Browser and may not work for some cell phone carriers. Please do not try to submit an application using Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Apple Safari.

REQUIREMENTS FOR OBTAINING A MARRIAGE LICENSE

Applicants 21 Years of Age or Older:
Proof of identity - one of the following:
Valid Driver's License or Identification Card issued by state or federal government
Valid Passport
Valid Armed Forces ID

Social Security Number
Applicants who do not have a social security number or are ineligible to obtain one will need to complete an affidavit provided by the Register of Deeds.

Divorced Applicants must provide month and year of divorce on the application.
Applicants divorced within the last thirty days must provide a copy of their Divorce Decree.

Applicants 18 to 20 Years of Age:
Applicants who are 18 to 20 years of age must also provide a certified copy of their birth certificate in addition to the above requirements. Foreign birth certificates must be accompanied by a translated copy of the birth certificate which has been notarized.

Applicants Less than 18 Years of Age:
Applicants under the age of 18 must have parental consent in addition to the above requirements. Please contact our office at (336) 342-8820 for detailed information concerning parental consent and requirements.

MARRIAGE CEREMONY

Once the license is issued applicants can appear before a magistrate or officiant to perform the marriage ceremony. The marriage ceremony requires two witnesses and can be performed anywhere within the State of North Carolina.

After applicants marry, licenses are returned to our office and placed on record. Marriage records are available for public access between the hours of 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday through Friday (excluding holidays). Marriages in North Carolina may be performed pursuant to G.S. 51-1 by:

  • An ordained minister of any religious denomination
  • A minister authorized by a church
  • A magistrate (contact a magistrate directly (336-634-6019) to confirm hours of operation and fees)
  • In accordance with any mode of solemnization recognized by any religious denomination, or federally or state recognized Indian Nation or Tribe

It is unlawful to solemnize a marriage in North Carolina without a completed marriage license issued by the Register of Deeds office.
